Maui Sangha  Bulletin Board

April 17 - June 4, 2011

This bulletin is a way to convey information to the Sangha about our Sangha activities. If you have information you would like to have included, call Susan at 573-3450 at least 5 days before the expiration of this bulletin. If you would like to receive these bulletins via e-mail, send your request to Susan at metta@maui.net .

The next day of silent meditation will be on Sunday, June 5. The day will be led by Steve Armstrong and Kamala Masters and will go from 9:00 until 4:00. Please plan to arrive by 8:45 to allow time to settle in as we will begin promptly at 9:00, and bring a bag lunch. You are welcome to arrive as early as 8:00 a.m. for an opportunity to converse with others before we go into silence. We'll have tea on the stove. In support of our efforts to reduce paper waste, we invite you to bring your own tea cup with you, but if you don't we'll have cups here. You are also invited to help as we continue to get the space ready for the day.

We’re happy to report that the collective dana received during the previous April 17 daylong meditation as well as that of some people who sent money from the mainland totaled $1200 and was sent to Mercy Corps, a Portland, Oregon humanitarian relief organization offering assistance to survivors of Japan’s recent earthquake and tsunami.

The Kula sitting group meets the 2nd and 4th Monday evenings of each month beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Candle Summers. The next meetings are April 25 and May 9th and 23. Out of compassion, we respectfully request that fragrances or scented personal care products not be worn during meditations. Call Candle at 878-6484 for more information.

The women’s meditation circle meets in Kula one Saturday a month. The next meeting is Saturday May 7th at 3:30 p.m. It is a committed group that meditates on one of the Bramhaviharas as well as a personal sharing circle based loosely on a style taught by Joanna Macy. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Candle at 878-6484 to set up a time to meet and talk.

The book club meets Saturday, May 7 at 12:30 p.m. Candle’s house in Kula. The book to be discussed is Living this Life Fully: Stories and Teachings of Munindra by Mirka Knaster. You can get the book through Vipassana Metta Foundation, or online through Amazon.com. Here’s a link to the discussion on Tricycle’s book club page: http://www.tricycle.com/community/living-life-fully-stories-and-teachings-munindra/

If you are interested in joining, please call Candle at 878-6484 to discuss the format.

Carpooling: We occasionally have requests for rides to the daylong sittings; if you would like to be on a list to possibly be available to offer rides to others and enjoy some company on the drive up, please call 573-3450 or send an email to metta@maui.net and let us know your name, telephone, email address and the part of the island you are travelling from. Thank you so much to the folks who have already responded, and to those who would consider this!

West and north views from lanai and seated on 1 1/2 acres. Must love dogs, as there are two terrier mixes that live outside but come in some. Must be employed. Call Candle at 808-878-6484.

Many of us appreciate the orderliness and beauty of the grounds here on the land, and may not realize the effort and funds required to maintain them. We invite you to consider offering some time to help maintain some of the existing landscaping, flowerbeds, and gardens. We have all kinds of service opportunities for all ranges of skill, knowledge and physical ability. If you’d like to help us spruce up the gardens please send an email to metta@maui.net to schedule a time convenient for you to help maintain the beauty we all so enjoy.

Personal Guidance: Steve and Kamala invite you to call on them for any support you need regarding your meditation practice on a dana (donation) basis. They are happy to arrange a time with you when they are on-island. Call 573-3450 to make an appointment.

There are individuals in our community who have allergies, asthma, or chemical sensitivities. Out of compassion, we respectfully request that fragrances or scented personal care products not be used during meditations or other sangha events. This will allow everyone to join us. Thank you.

Our neighbors have requested you go slowly and carefully on Kealakapu Rd. driving up and down the hill to our land. This is especially important if you find that you are arriving late to the sitting, and may be hurrying down the hill. There are sometimes children and animals in the road and visibility is limited. Our neighbors, like all of us want to be able to enjoy the quiet and stillness of this beautiful place where we all live. Please be respectful of that desire.
